Prescription Sunglasses for Those Wearing Eyeglass
Although we only carry two brands that actually cater for prescription eyewear, namely Gatorz and SOS (with SOS only providing inserts for prescription lenses), we thought it would be beneficial and rather insightful for our readers to carry a post on the relevant benefits and ease of acquiring, prescription lenses.
People with prescription eyeglasses find it rather difficult to get the required protection from the UV rays in sunlight. However, there are today various options in prescription sunglasses, well worth the additional investment they may incur.
Today, prescription sunglasses are available for all lens prescriptions, including bifocal and progressive lens. In fact, there are also prescription swimming goggles available for those who need help while swimming.
Basically, prescription sunglasses come in the same style as non-prescription sunglasses. The only limitations you may face is in some wraparound sunglasses that curves around the head. This is because making prescription sunglasses with sharp curves can lead to distorted vision.
If you want wraparound prescription sunglasses, there are some manufacturers who offer wraparounds with less extreme curves. However as they are available in a limited prescription range, it is better to discuss with the optician about one for yourself.
Prescription sunglasses are now available in various lens materials, including regular, high index, polycarbonate, glass and trivex- a material that is lightweight and similar to polycarbonate.
The lens offering the best optical quality are glass lenses; however they are not the most popular choices available today. This is basically because it is much heavier than the lenses made from other materials and can crack easily.
You could also buy prescription sunglasses having a photochromic tint called ‘transition lenses’. These lenses darken automatically in sunlight and when indoors, returns to a clear state.
Though these lenses are convenient for those wearing glasses, the tint gets activated only with UV rays. And while driving, the lens may not darken as most UV rays get blocked by the car windshield.
Unlike earlier assumptions, these prescription sunglasses are not as expensive as once thought. In fact, for the most part you can find special discounts on these sunglasses, if you buy them with your regular sunglasses.
